The “Fearless Flowers” series is a study of gender, sexuality, the gaze, and identity in contemporary Korea. Developed over two years and involving 23 participants, the project reflects on the relationship between a person and their own body, as well as the inner struggle with the image imposed by a conservative society that clings to outdated norms despite rapid transformation.

A human body adorned with flowers becomes a symbol of universal innocence, timelessness, and purity. Someone who might appear strong and unyielding in other contexts is, within the safe space of the studio, shown with sensitivity and humanity. Black clothing — a “social uniform” — decorated with flowers becomes a metaphor for each participant’s personal struggle and resilience, and by extension, a reflection of many others’ experiences.

The project seeks to capture an openness of mind: the acceptance of one’s body and sexuality, and the embrace of a modern, self-constructed identity toward which many contemporary Koreans aspire. I believe that artistic practice has a duty to rebel against social prejudice and question its relevance.

As an outsider, I had the privilege of being invited into this intimate form of expressing freedom — a search for meaning, beauty, and identity, while simultaneously portraying people who shape themselves: authentic, living works of art.

be yourself.
be provocative.
be loud.
be present.
be patient.
be free.
be chaotic.
be passionate.
be intentional.
be selective.
(…)
don’t be for everyone.
