Chalk can take the form of dust or a solid body; it is fragile and fleeting. In the school environment, it is used to record temporary information-content that students are meant to copy into their notebooks. The writing can then be easily erased with a sponge, and the board filled again with new material, until the chalk is eventually used up.
In 2025, 148 primary schools were closed in Poland, 146 of which were located in rural areas. This represents one of the highest levels of school closures in recent years. The phenomenon is not solely demographic in nature-schools in smaller towns and villages have served not only educational functions, but also social and cultural ones. Their closure contributes to the weakening of local communities and encourages migration to larger urban centers.
The process of school closures can be likened to a domino effect made of chalk-it sets off a chain of further, irreversible changes, leaving behind a trace that is difficult to rebuild.
